What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling has become a very popular treatment technique used by physical therapists because of its great and lasting effects. A thin monofilament (acupuncture) needle is inserted into a trigger point. A trigger point is is a knot in the muscles that holds toxins and creates pain and dysfunction in the muscle. When the needle is inserted into the trigger point it causes a twitch response, which feels like a quick involuntary contraction in the muscle. This helps to release the toxins and "reset" the muscle to its original length to provide relaxation in the muscle to improve function and decrease pain. Dry needling is also a great tool to release scar tissue, I have found great success with this method on women with c-section scars and incisional scar tissue build up.
Am I a Candidate for Dry Needling?
Anyone with a musculoskeletal issue could be a candidate for dry needling. People that have headaches/migraines, jaw issues, endometriosis, knee pain, plantar fasciitis, low back pain, shoulder pain, and any issue involving muscle! Also clients with scar tissue, you can tell if you have scar tissue if your scar is not smooth and has a palpable ridge or pulling inward.
Will I be Sore?
Some clients do report some muscle soreness following dry needling. The soreness is usually compared to a "work out" type soreness. Sometimes patients do report some bruising and/or hematoma's. The soreness effects will usually not last longer than a few days. Clients usually report immediate improvement following dry needling.
